About Me

My name is Monica Rios and I currently study Visual Communication Design at San Francisco State University. Apart from being a design student I enjoy partaking in many other hobbies such as painting, illustrating, 3D animation, punch needling, and photography.

In doing all of this I am inspired by the beauty in my Mexican/Latina culture as well as living by great sayings  such as "Fall in love with becoming the best version of yourself but with patience, with compassion, and respect to your own journey."

- S. McNutt.

My vision is to be able to produce fulfilling projects or products that can impact a large community of individuals. Whether it be a mass produced product or a one off piece of work, I hope that they impact people in their own ways.

Creative. Organized. Explorative.

This is an original illustration done that is inspired by a great quote from Frida Kahlo. I often find inspiration from myself and my own personal experiences since they are what I know best. With that in mind I felt a self portrait was fitting as I literally know myself best and internally have became more familiar and in tune with myself.

This is an original illustration that is inspired from Loteria playing cards as well as my siblings. Having all sisters can be a blessing and a curse but I would not want to have it any other way. I made this piece in honor of them and to celebrate our unity as siblings.

This is a piece of work from Denise Cortes, an artist that I admire. An essential theme in her work is her choice to highlight Latino culture, Aztec/Mayan Acenstry, and the journey of women. This journey ranges from sisterhood, motherhood, and how we view the woman's body as more than just its physical attributes. You can find more of her work at http://pearmama.com

  1. Monica, Welcome to DES 505!
What would be ONE (if not two, or three) of your desired, or preferred DES Project Area of Interests, or designated Proposal(s)?

    1. Hello Professor Gomes. A few desired DES project interests I have are the impact of social media on young minds and how it has affected the new generation that is growing up with a strong online presence. In addition, a research proposal I am interested in is the topic presented by Logan Evasco about creating branding for a virtual art gallery for the company Creative Climate.

  3. Hi Monica, That's some great art work, and I like how you used work you have done as the images that represent you. Also I like the captions you added on the images, so that we can get the inspiration of the artwork.

  4. Monica, I really liked the artwork you chose to attach! After reading your entry, I can say that the works you chose most definitely reflect your goals and aspirations as a Latinx designer. I specifically enjoyed the loteria art titled "Las Hermanas."

  5. Hi Monica, I am happy that you want to explore illustration. I love using illustrator but II do not have a lot of patience to create that kind of work. It is also nice to know that you want to support our Latino culture with your work.

    1. Hi William, thank you for the love on the illustration! I also struggle with having patience with Illustrator which is why I make most of my illustrations in Procreate! It is a very user friendly app for drawing that I recommend to everyone who has an I Pad!

I love your self portrait and the notion of being constantly inspired by personal experience, that really resonated with me. 7. Hello Monica, it is awesome that you are an illustrator who is inspired by Mexican heritage! Visual work is all about storytelling and the story we tell is often based off what inspires us. I remember visiting Mexico and feeling very inspired by everything. 3D animation also requires a lot of patience and I admire people who partake in 3D work! Good luck with your projects!
